BARBURY

Barbury Castle is possibly the nicest event... with the amazing settings, it is spectator friendly and the ground is perfect!
RAYEF was in the 120 strong CIC***... He was very excited to be out and thought he should just go straight around the XC! He took a lot of work to settle him down but luckily by the time his test was on Saturday afternoon, he was on brilliant form! He scored a 34.8 dressage and that put him in the lead from Pippa Funnell on a 36.4 and in 3rd was Emily Baldwin on a 40.2.
He showjumped brilliantly but in the main arena at Barbury you have to go up a bank, jump 2 fences and drop back down the bank, this unsettled him slightly so annoyingly he had the rail at the bottom of the bank... this was still good enough to keep him in the lead as Pippa and Emily both had a rail.
XC was in reverse order so it was a very long wait!
The time is always hard to get on the XC at Barbury and although I really wanted to win, I also wanted a sound horse and wasn't willing to risk a silly mistake by going crazily fast! RAYEF was fantastic and he added 6.8 time penalties which unfortunately cost us the win... we ended up in 3rd, still a great result and I really hope the senior selectors may just consider him for the European Championhips now... if not then we will be having a good crack at Burghley CCI****!

Results update...

Sorry I have been useless at keeping up to date with my diary so here is a quick run through on how the horses have been going in the past months.....

MINIMEE had a win in the Open Novoce at Withington Manor.

OUTWRAD BOUND and OBOS COOLEY both picked up 2nd placings in the BE100 sections at Hambleden.

OUTWARD BOUND jumped a lovely double clear to finish 4th in his first Novice at Aston Le Walls, MILLFIELD CONDESCEND and LONGBARN MAISIE both went well in the Novice to finish 3rd and 4th respectively on their sections.

We then had a trip across the water to Saumur, France. GINGER MAY KILLINGHURST gave me a fantastic ride XC adding a few time faults and just tipped the first fence SJ to finish in 12th place in the CCI***. NOBLE BESTMAN had juimped a brilliant double clear in the CIC** to finish in 18th place.

A very successful day at Pontispool saw OBOS COOLEY and BROOKFIELD BAKER STREET winning their BE100 sections and OUTWARD BOUND winning the Novice.

A trip up North to the lovely Bramham CCI*** Under 25 Championships with NOBLE BESTMAN was next.... He went very green in the atmosphere of the dressage and made a few mistakes to score 54.... he then jumped an awesome double clear round what was one of the strongest CCI*** tracks I have ever seen. He added just 4.8 time penalties to finish in 12th.... Not bad considering he was Pre-Novice last year!

At great Tew, OBOS COOLEY was 2nd in the BE100, MILLFIELD CONDESCEND was 7th and OUtWARD BOUND was 10th in their Novice sections.

The beautiful Salperton Park was the next event. Jason Houghton who owns RAYEF lives at Salperton so it was great the RAYEF had such a successful run on his home grounds! It was his first run back since Badminton and he was very excited! He did a flash test to score 22.2 in the dressage and jumped a steady double clear to finish 4the in the AI section. OUTWARD BOUND was 2nd in the Novice and OBOS COOLEY jumped a steady double clear in his first Novice.

BADMINTON

Well where do I start...??? What a week I have just had... my first Badminton, RAYEF's first CCI**** and we came home with a top 10 placing, a saddle and 3 trophies!!!
I can safely say I had a dream debut!
As we entered the stable yard I had butterflies in my stomach....'We've made it... !!!' I said to Zanie (super groom!)
RAYEF settled straight into his lovely stable in the main yard.... he was stabled next to do Pippa Funnells horses.
With everything a day late, trot up started at 4.30pm on the Thursday afternoon. My sponsor HOLLAND COOPER clothing provided a stunning outfit for me to trot up in, pictures will follow!
I couldn't believe how many people were watching, RAYEF loved every minute of it, he definitely thought every person there was watching him!
He strutted his stuff and passed.
I then had a lesson with Yogi and took him for a walk around the main arena... he was going beautifully!
7am Friday morning and Yogi was there for the last drilling, things were looking good and I was getting quite excited about doing my test!
10.32am we entered the arena.... RAYEF felt fantastic and I was just hoping he wouldn't get too tense or spooky in the arena, he had a quick look at the photographers as we went around the arena but then he felt amazing! I got a 9 for my entry which is always a good start! I couldn't fault him at all, everything came up as it should and the advice Yogi gave me just before I went in, "build the four walls of your indoor school around the arena and ride like you do every day at home!", seemed to have worked!
I was so pleased with him, he had pulled off his best test and what a time to do it!!!
I was congratulated by everyone as I came out and then suddenly Yogi said "36.5" at first I wondered what he was talking about and then I looked at the big screen... I had just scored a 36.5!!!!!!
I couldn't quite believe it... I was 5th to go on the first day of dressage so to get a mark like that was crazy!!
That evening I got a call from Becky Elvin saying I was needed for the press conference... I was still in the lead after day 1!!!
I loved being sat up there and I really did savour every minute of it... you never know whats around the corner and it's not every day you get interviewed for being the current leader at Badminton!!
I had a day off on Saturday, well that meant alot of walking of the xc course! I walked it with Yogi, on my own and then with Sam Watson.
I was sure after all the really smart combinations had strutted their stuff on Saturday afternnon that I would be scraping into the top 10 or just outside but to my amazement I had another call from Becky Elvin asking me to go to the press conference again... I was so shocked when she told be I was lying 3rd!!
Ruth Edge had performed her normal stunning test to score 33.3 and Piggy French (who scored the only 10) was just 0.6 ahead of me on a 36.0
The cross country fences suddenly seemed to double in size with the realisation that tomorrow I had to attempt to jump them!
XC didn't start until 12pm and I was due out at 12.16pm.... One final course walk with Yogi in the morning and a gentle hack for Rayef.
I then had to occupy myself for an hour or 2 so the trusty Bridget Jones' DVD came out!!
Jason Houghton (Rayef's owner) came into the lorry and was a little shocked to see his jockey relaxing infront of the TV but it was a good distraction!
What some of you may not realise is that we have a lucky mascot.... SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS! He comes in the form of a small ball and a small toy... he kept myself and Zanie amused throuhgout the week.... he sat outside Rayef's stable and on the odd occasion he came hacking in my pocket!!
When I went down all ready to get on for XC I walked around the corner to find an enormous cowboy SPONGEBOB... Jason had infact embraced the Spongebob theme and decided that as XC day was a bigger deal than dressage, we needed a bigger Spongebob!! It was the perfect thing to make me giggle and take my mind off the very sick feeling I was witnessing!!
Back to the serious stuff and I was legged up and hacking down to the warm up... now feeling really sick!!
Rayef was well up for the task ahead but I was getting more and more nervous and had a small moment with my best friend, Georgie Spence, in the warm up! We had a hug and the spectators must have wondered what these 2 muppets were doing!!!!
Zanie was brilliant and as she led me up to the start box she kept reassuring me that Rayef would fly round and reminding me that this is the moment I'd been waiting for!
As they counted me down and I jumped out the start box the roar from the crowd is something I will never forget! It felt amazing!!
Once I had jumped fence one and left the arena I took a deep breath and got on with the job in hand... suddenly it was just me and my boy with 4 miles of galloping and jumping to do!
He was faultless... as I jumped the big spread down to the skinny at fence 6 I realised
that Rayef was on flying form and felt like a true pro!
I actually started to enjoy it and as he cruised through the vicarage vee line I was having a wonderful ride.
The only time I really noticed the crowds was when I jumped through the lake.... the cheer was incredible!
Galloping up to Huntsmans close I felt Rayef begin to tire a little, he jumped the gate in and the log but then he had locked onto the log that we had to turn inside which slightly messed my line up to the bounce, he managed to fit a stride in the bounce but that just showed how honest he is... he only saw the bounce at the last second and was tiring so could have easily used that as an excuse not to jump but he fiddled his way through and off we went towards the quarry.
He was foot perfect through the quarry... now just one more combination and then the last fence...Whilst walking the course, Sam Watson had said to me, "whatever you do don't get to here and think, 'oh my God, I've nearly jumped clear round Badminton'!!" That is exactly what I thought and had to give myself a talking to and remember that it's not over and until you have crossed the finish line!
The Rolex combination seemed fine when I walked it but I suddenly realised that Rayef was tiring, he picked up and jumped through it brilliantly and as I entered the main arena the crowd cheering sent shivers down my spine... I have never in my life witnessed anything like that before, Rayef jumped the last and my childhood dream of jumping clear round Badminton had come true!
8.8 time faults seemed like I would drop down the order to about 20th but as I sat and watched the carnage unfold I couldn't believe it when the final scorebored showed I was lying 6th and just 1.7 penalties behind the leader... the legendary Mark Todd!!!
Zanie was taking brilliant care of Rayef and Mark Lucey (our vet)gave him a check over and seemed happy with him!
I was asked back to the press conference, even though I wasn't in the top 3... they wanted me to sit between the 2 eventing greats, Mark Todd on my right and Andrew Nicholson on my left! We had a laugh as Mark said the last time he was sat in the leaders seat on cross country night at Badminton I was being pushed around in a push chair!!!
I also then realised that Mark's Badminton debut was 10 years before I was even born... so there is plenty of time to hopefully one day be sat in his position!!
Trot up on Monday morning went very smoothly, another stunning outfit provided by HOLLAND COOPER!
I had jump on Rayef in the morning and he was feeling very fresh!
It seemed like a very long wait until I jumped.... first we had the parade which was a great opportunity to get Rayef into the ring and see the crowds!
As I entered the arena for my showjumping round, I was so nervous, this was by far the biggest moment of my life!
Rayef got spooked by the cameras at fence 3 and although he managed to clear fence 4 he was still a little unsettled coming to fence 5 and unfortunately he knocked it and it came down! He then settled and jumped the rest of the course beautifully, I was over the moon and devastated all at the same time!
In the prize giving I was awarded a saddle for the best under 25, I also recieved trophies for being the best British first timer and best local rider. Rayef picked up the trophy for the youngest British owned and ridden horse in the top 12.
I have watched the replay a hundred times and feel so lucky and priviledged to have had such a fantastic horse to have my first ride round Badminton on. If I'd had the chance to ride the showjumping again I would have ridden it differently but we can all say that with hind sight!
The reality is that I finished 8th on my Badminton debut and I can not wait for next year!!!!!

THANKYOU's:
I am so Thankful to Jason Houghton for being so patient and such a fantastic owner... let alone one that has a wicked sense of humour!!
Also a big Thankyou to Yogi Breisner who has helped me from the start of my career... I couldn't have done it without him!
My sponsors who have all been so supportive and provided me with everything I need!
The team at home are amazing (Mum and Felicity Organ)... they got up early and got the yard done so they could come and support me each day!
Zanie Tanswell for looking after Rayef to perfection, turning him out beautifully and most of all for putting up with me!!!

BIG THANKYOU....

I have to say a huge Thankyou to my sponsor BARNSBY.... I rang them in a pre-Badminton panic becuase Rayef has changed shape now he is fit ready for Badminton and I didn't feel the dressage saddle was sitting on him right, they very kindly came out at 6am this morning as this was the only time they could do it.... Rayef and I very much appreciate you helping us out on such short notice!!!!!!!!!!!
ARIAT have kindly supplied me with some new competition boots ready for next week....
And I am looking forward to seeing my trot up outfits which are generously being supplied by HOLLAND COOPER clothing.... we won the best trot up outfit at Burghley last year so we are going for the double!!!!!!!!

Sapey....

A trip out with the young ones to Sapey... Brookfield Baker Street, Outward Bound and Obos Cooley all in the BE100.
They all produced nice tests with double clears.... Brookfield Baker Street winning on his 28 dressage, Outward Bound finishing in 4th on his 32 dressage and Obos Cooley adding 2.4 time penalties to his 29 dressage to also finish 4th.
A good day at the office with some very exciting young horses!

Weston Park....

We headed to Weston with Millfield Condescend in the Novice and Ginger May Killinghurst and Rayef who were both competing in the Advanced.
They had a **** section which meant I could practise the Badminton test with Rayef, he was really good and is satrting to find the movements easier.... he broke in his extended trot when he jumped a patch of soil!!! He scored 29 so I was really pleased. He then jumped a brilliant showjumping round, we withdrew him from the xc which was always the plan after he ran well at Belton last week.... All on track for the big one now and fingers firmly crossed he stays in one piece for another week!
Ginger May Killinghurst was on great form, having not run at Belton she was rather fiesty all day!! She scored a 30.4 in the dressage and then left all the poles up in the showjumping, the time proved tight and I picked up 7 time faults but the main aim was to jump clear! She flew round the xc picking up 12 time penalties and a 9th placing!
Millfield Condescend was doing his first novice and he went fantastically, adding just 5 time faults to his dressage score of 29 to finish 6th.

Belton...

The A team were out again at Belton last weekend.... GINGER MAY KILLINGHURST and RAYEF in the CIC***, NOBLE BESTMAN and FERNHILL CRISTAL in the Advanced Under 25.
GINGER MAY KILLINGHURST wasn't loving the ground in her dressage so didn't produce her best test.. she scored 49.9 and was later withdrawn and will be saved for another day!
RAYEF was on brilliant form, he did a 41.5 which left him in a very competitive 4th place after 2 full days of dressage. He jumped a fantastic double clear, I didn't run him too fast xc as this was his final prep run before Badminton, he added 12.4 time pens to complete in 8th place.
He is now being wrapped up in cotton wool ready for Badminton... the nest 2 weeks are going to be very nerve wracking as he is so accident prone!!!
Fingers and toes firmly crossed!!
FERNHILL CRISTAL was very naughty in his dressage.... a little too excited about being an Advanced pony!!! He scored a 36.4 but redeemed himself with a lovely double clear... he felt fantsatic and really looking roward to him stepping up to *** this year!
NOBLE BESTMAN was doing his first Advanced... he proved he was more than ready when he added just 8 time faults xc to his 29.8 dressage and win the section!
A very pleasing weekend with all boys and girls home safe and sound!

Lincoln...

Off to Lincoln on Gold Cup day which was a mistake!! LONG RUN had been schooling at our yeard the week before with Yogi so we were keen to watch... luckily my times were perfect and I could spend the afternoon watching the race.... and what a race it turned out to be! So pleased for the Waley-Cohens and all connections for winning such a brilliant race... what a horse!!
Back to the eventing... OBOS COOLEY was on great form, producing a lovely test and a double clear inside thetime which left him a winner!! Winner numbe 1 is always a good feeling especially on a horse I think so much of!
MILLFIELD CONDESCEND produced a nice test and sj clear, unfortunately he took a dislike to a banner on the xc and was given 20 penalties but he felt very good over the fences!
The following day we were back, this time with the A team.... GINGER MAY KILLINGHURST, RAYEF, FERNHILL CRISTAL and NOBLE BESTMAN, they were all excited to be out!!
All horses jumped brilliant double clears, GINGER MAY KILLINGHURST produced a brilliant 22 dressage and added 4 time faults to leave her 3rd.
FERNHILL CRISTAL added 5.2 time faults to a 30.9 test and finished 7th.
The other two boys were a bit slower xc so missed out on top 10 placings!
To finally run RAYEF xc was so exciting!!
I have such a brilliant string of horses and these are my top 4 so to have them all out at the same time made for a great weekend!

Tweseldown...

The first event of the season.... Very excited to finally be out and about!!
OBOS COOLEY and BROOKFIELD BAKER STREET were both making their debuts in the BE100. They are both only 5year olds and jumped lovely double clears afet nice tests, steady rounds xc meant they missed out on prizes!
MILLFIELD CONDESCEND did 28 dressage followed by double clear, again a slow xc round pushed him down the order to 6th.
FERNHILL CRISTAL and RAYEF went for the OI.... both did nice tests to score 28 and 30 respectively. I withdrew RAYEF after a lovely clear round sj as he was headin off to Lincoln the following week for his first proper run!
FERNHILL CRISTAL also jumped clear sj and was flying round the xc but sadly picked up 20 penalties when I miss judged the turn in the water, he felt fantastic though so all in all a good start to the season!

NEW ADDITIONS.... Horses and gadgets!!!!

It has all been very hectic recently, we are getting into full swing with the eventing season just around the corner!
A quick update on everything.... Philip and Sarah Walker have very kindly bought NOBLE BESTMAN for me to keep the ride... he is a really exciting horse and one of my favourite to ride! The aim for him is to step up a level and go to Bramham CCI***.
STORMHILL KOSSACK is also a new addition to the yard.... he is owned by Debbie Ewing. I am looking forward to building a partnership with him and hopefully, all being well, he will be aimed at a CCI**** this season.
Today we have just had another new arrival.... Philip Walker has bought an Equine Spa.... Spoilt ponies or what?????!!!!
I am sure all the horses will benefit greatly from the treatments!

JAS at Hartpury

Last weekend we were out at Hartpury for another JAS.
We took the same crew as last time and all in all they went well. OBOS Cooley found it exciting and rolled 2 poles in the XC section of the BE100 but I was pleased with his jumping and his attitude is fantastic!!
JITTERBUG was on cracking form and won the Novice on a score of 0..... she then finished on a score of 3 to win the OI.
UNO DI LANDRO was 4th in the Novice and had an unlucky pole in the OI but he was also jumping much better.

Monday 31 January 2011

JAS at Solihull

We took 2 lorries to JAS on Sunday, Grace Walker took VANCOUVER and NOBLE SPRINGBOK, whilst I had my new young one OBOS COOLEY, JITTERBUG, UNO DI LANDRO and MINIMEE.
OBOS COOLEY is a lovely 5yo I bought from Richard Sheane in December. It was his first attempt at JAS and he was brilliant, he jumped double clear in both the intro and BE100, winning the latrter class with a style mark of 5.
UNO DI LANDRO was having his first outing for a while, he was unlucky to have a fence down in both the BE100 and the Novice but I was pleased with how he jumped and excited to have him back out competing.
MINIMEE was on great form and he had one down in the Novice and jumped double clear just adding time faults to his style mark of 3 to finish 6th in the Open.
JITTERBUG was a winner again... she really is amazing and puts a big smile on my face! She jumped double clear in the Novice and the Open finishing on her style mark of 4 to win the Novice and adding 2 time faults to another style mark of 4 to finsih 5th in the Open.
Grace did very well with both of hers picking up a 10th with NOBLE SPRINGBOK in the Open.

Showjumping regulars!!!

Since the New Year we have become showjumping regulars!!
Last week RAYEF and FERNHILL CRISTAL went out to Hartpury, RAYEF was on cracking form and jumped double clear in both the 1m15 and Foxhunter. CRISTAL had 1 down in the 1m15 and then just rolled a pole in the jump off of the Foxhunter.
I have been to Hand and Addington with some young ones.... they have all been jumping really well.
More jumping to follow and some World Class training days to look forward to....

DING DONG SHOW!!!

Happy New Year to everybody!

Over New Year I went to the Ding Dong show at Hand EC, it was a 4 day jumping show.
I took JITTERBUG, FERNHILL CRISTAL and RAYEF.
On the first day they were all very excited to be out, a little too excited and they forgot that they had ever seen a set of showjumps before!!!
Day 2 was slightly better with RAYEF jumping really well in the 1m30, sadly just tipping the last rail down.
CRISTAL was still being a little over excited in the first class so we entered him in a later class where he jumped a lovely clear.
JITTERBUG did the speed class and was flying but when I turned tight to an upright she just didn't quite get her front legs up quick enough!
In the evening it was the Puissance... I decided to give it a go on JITTERBUG, she has been great in the eventers puissance over a triple bar but I had no idea what she'd make of a solid red brick wall!!!!

She was totally amazing though... she cleared the 1m77 wall in round 5 and ended up winning it, it was shared between 3 of us as there are only 5 rounds!
Coming down to the wall was very nerve racking!!! But what an awesome feeling!!!
Day 3 and day 4 were much better and all the horses started jumping well. JITTERBUG was 5th in the small grand prix on the last day so she managed to pay her way which was nice!!
